Building a smart home doesn't have to be overwhelming. This guide walks you through the basics — from choosing your first devices to setting up your ecosystem.

Step 1: Choose Your Ecosystem

The first decision is which voice assistant and hub platform to use. The three main options are:

• Apple HomeKit — Best for privacy and Apple device users
• Google Home — Great integration with Google services and Chromecast
• Amazon Alexa — Widest device compatibility and best value Echo speakers

Step 2: Start Small

Don't try to automate everything at once. Start with one or two categories:

1. Smart lighting (biggest visual impact)
2. Smart plugs (easiest to install)
3. Smart speaker (the control centre)

Step 3: Expand Gradually

Once you're comfortable, add security cameras, smart locks, climate control, and more complex automations. Each addition should solve a real problem or improve your daily routine.
