WiFi & Network Setup
How to optimise your home network for smart devices.
Why WiFi Matters
Your smart home is only as reliable as your WiFi network. A single router in the hallway won't cut it if you have devices in every room.
Recommended Setup
- Mesh WiFi System — Use 2-3 mesh nodes for whole-home coverage. We recommend Ubiquiti, TP-Link Deco, or Google WiFi.
- Separate IoT Network — Create a dedicated WiFi network (SSID) for smart home devices to keep them isolated from your personal devices.
- 2.4GHz Band — Most smart devices use 2.4GHz. Ensure this band is enabled and not set to "5GHz only".
Bandwidth Requirements
Smart home devices use very little bandwidth individually — a smart plug might use 1-2 KB/s. However, cameras can use 2-4 Mbps each when streaming. Plan your internet speed accordingly:
- 1-5 smart devices: Any broadband connection is fine
- 5-20 devices: 50+ Mbps recommended
- 20+ devices with cameras: 100+ Mbps recommended
Static IPs
For critical devices like hubs and cameras, consider assigning static IP addresses through your router's DHCP settings. This prevents connection issues after router reboots.
